for example, "Billy dropped the baby.'
In this sentence "the baby" is the object and it is directly linked to the action verb, "dropped."
Now, to balance this out--there is such things as "Intransitive verbs," and as you might guess--these are also action verbs, but these verbs don't require a direct object:
for example, "Who called?" Obsiously, we don't know who did the calling; therefore it is intransitive.
